World number 19 Ekaterina Alexandrova collapsed on court and was forced to retire from her first-round match at the Memphis Classic as temperatures reached 34C.

The Russian, the top seed at the WTA 250 event, was trailing 7-6 (7-2) 4-6 5-4 against 16-year-old compatriot Kristina Liutova when she fell to the ground in the middle of a point and required immediate medical attention. The match had already been paused once as Alexandrova tried to continue, and she received a time violation for taking too long to serve amid her struggles.

The 31-year-old was well enough to stand but had to forfeit the contest, which had lasted more than three hours, and needed a wheelchair to help her off court. The retirement handed Liutova victory in her debut match on the WTA tour, but the teenager was left in tears on court amid the chaotic scenes.

The episode again raises questions about player safety in extreme heat, a familiar theme during the American summer hard-court swing, where afternoon temperatures regularly push past 30C. For Liutova, the outcome was a remarkable introduction to the tour: a win over a seeded opponent in her first WTA main-draw match, achieved in the most unusual circumstances. For Alexandrova, attention now turns to recovery ahead of the US Open hard-court season, with the hope that the heat-related scare has no lasting consequences.
