The Houston Rockets have secured another cornerstone of their young core, agreeing to a five-year, $208 million rookie-scale contract extension with guard-forward Amen Thompson, the team confirmed on Thursday. The deal, first reported by ESPN's Shams Charania, includes a 10% trade kicker and keeps Thompson under contract through 2032.
Thompson, 23, was selected fourth overall in the 2023 NBA Draft and has quickly established himself as one of the league's most versatile two-way players. The 6-foot-7 wing led the NBA in minutes played during the 2025-26 season, posting career highs of 18.3 points, 5.3 assists and 1.5 steals per game. He ranked eighth in total steals and fourth in loose ball recoveries, according to ESPN Research.
He was among just nine players in the league to average at least 18 points, seven rebounds and five assists — the youngest to join a list that includes Nikola Jokic, Luka Doncic, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jayson Tatum. That production earned Thompson a spot on the 2024-25 All-Defensive First Team, where he received 74 first-place votes out of 100 media ballots, finishing ahead of Ivica Zubac for the final spot on the five-man unit.
The extension represents the same percentage of the Rockets' salary cap as the five-year, $185 million rookie extension Houston signed Alperen Sengun to in 2024, a reflection of Thompson's standing as a franchise building block. The Rockets have now locked in multiyear extensions for their young core of Thompson, Sengun, Jabari Smith Jr. and Tari Eason. Before last season, Houston also reached a two-year, $90 million extension with All-NBA forward Kevin Durant, giving him a player option for 2027-28.
Thompson's positional flexibility has been a defining trait since his arrival. Originally drafted as a wing, he played occasional minutes at center during the 2023-24 season after Sengun's ankle injury, and stepped in at point guard during the 2024-25 campaign when Fred VanVleet was sidelined. Head coach Ime Udoka has deployed Thompson across all five positions depending on matchups, making him a uniquely valuable piece in Houston's system.
The Rockets have won 52 games in each of the last two seasons, finishing fifth in the Western Conference. With Thompson, Sengun, Durant and offseason additions Marcus Smart and Nikola Vucevic in the mix, the franchise is positioning itself as a legitimate contender heading into the 2026-27 season.
