Arthur Fils claimed the biggest title of his career on Sunday, defeating Frances Tiafoe 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 to win the Cincinnati Open and become a Masters 1000 champion for the first time. The 22-year-old Frenchman, seeded 21st, capped a week of dominant tennis at the Lindner Family Tennis Center with a commanding performance in the deciding set after a dramatic momentum swing.
The final was historic even before a ball was struck: it marked the first ATP Masters 1000 final contested between two Black players. Fils is the third Black man to win a Masters 1000 title, following Ben Shelton and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and the youngest French champion in Masters 1000 history.
Fils came out firing, rattling off five aces in his first three service games and breaking Tiafoe early to race through the opening set 6-3. But Tiafoe, who had been mentally resolute all week, reset immediately. The American found rhythm behind his first serve and freed up his groundstrokes, overwhelming Fils in a one-sided second set that ended 6-1 and levelled the match in just 54 minutes.
At the start of the decider, Fils trailed 0-30 on his serve — the match hanging in the balance. He responded with first serves and relentless aggression off both wings, recovering to hold and halting Tiafoe's surge. From there, Fils took command, breaking Tiafoe three times while the American's game unravelled. Tiafoe saved three championship points in the final game before Fils closed it out with his 11th ace of the match.
"It's been a tough last year. I didn't play the French Open. I lost early in Washington. People think that I'm done. But here we are. I got the title," Fils said.
The victory caps a remarkable comeback for Fils, who missed most of the past year with a stress fracture in his back and a hip injury that forced him out of the French Open. He has now climbed to a career-high ranking of No. 11 and sits fifth in the ATP race. With Jannik Sinner absent from the US Open draw due to injury, Fils enters the year's final grand slam as a genuine title contender.
Tiafoe, who was seeking to become the first American man to win in Cincinnati since Andy Roddick in 2006, was gracious in defeat. "I'm going to have two Cincinnati finals trophies at the crib. I wish they were both champion ones," he said. The American also revealed he had been dealing with hip discomfort during the match.
