Elisabetta Cocciaretto will face Denmark's Clara Tauson in the first round of the Mubadala Citi DC Open, the WTA 500 event in Washington D.C., after the main-draw ceremony was completed on Friday.
The 25-year-old Italian, ranked No. 58 in the world, is the only Italian player in the singles main draw and faces a stern test against Tauson, a powerful ball-striker ranked just outside the top 30. The pair have met once before on the WTA Tour, with Tauson prevailing in three sets at the 2024 US Open.
Should Cocciaretto advance past the Danish No. 1, she would likely face eighth seed Emma Navarro or wild-card entrant Sofia Kenin in the second round. Both Navarro and Kenin are former Grand Slam champions or finalists — Kenin won the 2020 Australian Open — making the path to the quarter-finals particularly treacherous.
The entire bottom quarter of the draw is anchored by No. 3 seed Naomi Osaka, who receives a first-round bye and will await the winner of the match between wild card Ashlyn Krueger and Britain's Katie Boulter.
Top seed Jessica Pegula, the world No. 6 and a Washington finalist in 2023, heads the top half and will enter the tournament in the second round against either Poland's Magdalena Frech or American Ann Li. Also in the top half are No. 4 seed Diana Shnaider and No. 5 seed Anna Kalinskaya, both also beneficiaries of first-round byes.
Among the most anticipated first-round matchups, Anastasia Potapova faces wild card Venus Williams, while 2023 finalist and No. 6 seed Madison Keys opens against Liudmila Samsonova. In the bottom half, Filipino teenager Alexandra Eala meets wild card Zheng Qinwen, and No. 2 seed Elina Svitolina awaits either a qualifier or Spain's Cristina Bucsa.
The tournament runs from July 27 through August 2 at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center in Washington D.C.
