Cristiano Ronaldo left Portugal's training camp in Copenhagen on Monday evening, on the eve of the Nations League meeting with Denmark, after an attempted rapprochement with head coach Jorge Jesus and Portuguese football federation president Pedro Proença collapsed during the day. The 41-year-old captain had his private jet fly in from Madrid and boarded it for the return flight to Spain; the federation confirmed his departure in an official note.
Ronaldo moved quickly to frame the decision on his own terms. "After the press conference of the coach of the national team and after a conversation with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, I have decided to leave the training camp of the selection," he wrote in a statement. "I wish my teammates and Portugal good luck, without exceptions." He then added the line that keeps this story firmly open: "In due course I will tell all Portuguese the truth about the reasons that led me to leave the national team to which I have always devoted myself."
The federation's note was brief and functional. "The Portuguese Football Federation informs that Portuguese international Cristiano Ronaldo has left the team's training camp, currently in Copenhagen," it read, adding that preparation for the matches against Denmark and Norway "will continue as planned, with the remaining 24 called-up players" and that the whole national-team environment "maintains maximum attention on the next matches and on achieving the set goals".
The trigger was Jesus's press conference. The coach insisted he had no problem with Ronaldo and that the decision not to field him against Norway and Denmark had been agreed with the player himself. For Ronaldo, according to a reconstruction by Spanish journalist Edu Aguirre on El Chiringuito, that was precisely the problem: he felt betrayed. Aguirre reported that Jesus had apologised privately for leaving Ronaldo warming up against Norway without sending him onto the pitch, and had promised to clear the air publicly at the press conference. Instead, the account went, the coach came out "as the one who controls everything", making clear that Cristiano was "just a player like the others".
The tension had been building for days. Ronaldo was substituted during the Nations League match against Wales. In Sunday's game against Norway, Jesus told him he would get half an hour; the number 7 warmed up but stayed on the bench for the entire match and left the pitch visibly upset. He then skipped the pre-match training session before the Denmark fixture, left the session after a brief exchange with the coach and returned to the hotel. On Monday evening Proença intervened in person at the camp in an emergency attempt to repair the rift. The situation appeared to have calmed down — until Jesus's press conference sent it spiralling again within minutes.
According to Marca, as reported by TuttoMercatoWeb, Jesus and Proença made one last attempt at the airport, reaching Ronaldo before take-off to persuade him to change his mind. The forward did not waver: after meeting the federation's top officials he boarded his aircraft and flew back to Madrid.
The consequences could be severe. Citing A Bola, TuttoMercatoWeb reports that article 160 of the FPF's own regulations allows sanctions of between one and six months' suspension, plus a fine of roughly €500 to €1,000 for professional players, against those called up who abandon the camp or fail to report for national-team duties without valid justification. The regulations also provide for an automatic preventive suspension when a player is absent or leaves the group.
The timing makes the episode all the more striking. After winning a European Championship and a Nations League title, and with the five-time Ballon d'Or winner having weighed international retirement at the end of the 2026 World Cup, this window had been widely seen as his last dance with the Seleção. Instead of a dignified farewell, a chapter that spans 234 appearances and 136 goals for Portugal — the national team's record for both caps and goals — now risks closing in tension and controversy, with Ronaldo's promised truth still to come.
That promise keeps every option open. Portugal will face Denmark and Norway without their captain and record scorer, while in Madrid the man who has defined an era of Portuguese football begins explaining, on his own terms, why he walked away.
