World No. 19 Ekaterina Alexandrova collapsed during her first-round match at the inaugural Memphis Classic on Tuesday, forced to retire in 34°C heat as 16-year-old qualifier Kristina Liutova claimed her first WTA victory under distressing circumstances.
The top seed was trailing 7-6(2) 4-6 5-4 when she fell to the ground mid-point, prompting immediate medical attention. Alexandrova, 31, had already received a time violation for taking too long to serve as she struggled with the oppressive Tennessee conditions. After attempting to continue, she ultimately conceded the match, which had already stretched beyond three hours.
Liutova, ranked No. 229 and playing her first WTA Tour main-draw match, broke down in tears on court as her opponent received treatment. The Russian teenager, born in 2010, had come through qualifying to reach the main draw before producing the biggest win of her fledgling career, albeit under harrowing circumstances for both players.
