Enric Mas sealed the biggest victory of his career on Sunday, claiming the overall title at the 2026 Vuelta a España after the final stage in Granada was neutralised for general classification purposes. The 31-year-old Spaniard became the first rider from his country to win his home Grand Tour since Alberto Contador in 2014, ending a 12-year wait for Spanish fans.
Mas crossed the finish line on the Paseo del Salvador surrounded by his Movistar teammates, completing a three-week odyssey that began in earnest on stage 8 when race favourite Tadej Pogačar crashed out of the race. From that moment, the Spaniard took the red leader's jersey and never looked back, defending it through 13 stages of increasingly intense pressure from his rivals.
The final classification saw Mas finish 2 minutes and 15 seconds clear of four-time Vuelta champion Primož Roglič, with Austria's Felix Gall a further 29 seconds back in third. Richard Carapaz, the 2019 Giro d'Italia winner, completed the top four at 6 minutes and 54 seconds.
"It's a day to remember, a great day," Mas said in his post-race press conference. "There's always a great deal of tension on the final day about what can happen, and it was a long wait and a long way to get to today. This is a very special one."
The victory also marked a resurgence for Movistar, who last won a Grand Tour when Richard Carapaz claimed the 2019 Giro d'Italia while riding for the Spanish outfit. Under the team's current structure, it was a statement result that confirmed Mas as one of the premier stage-race riders of his generation, having previously finished as Vuelta runner-up three times — in 2018, 2021 and 2022.
Stage 21, a 112-kilometre route around Granada featuring the Alto de la Alhambra climb on each of the four circuits, provided a fitting backdrop. Following talks between the Vuelta organisers and the CPA riders' union, the final lap was neutralised for GC purposes due to safety concerns, with times taken after the fourth passage of the finish line. The stage itself was won by Tobias Halland Johannessen of Uno-X Mobility, who outsprinted a late three-up breakaway ahead of Alessandro Romele and Ramses Debruyne.
The race had been defined by drama. Pogačar's departure on stage 8 reshuffled the general classification entirely, while Mikel Landa's breakaway victory on the queen stage 20 at Collado del Alguacil showcased the depth of competition behind Mas. Oscar Onley, the 23-year-old Briton, secured the white jersey for best young rider, finishing sixth overall.
For Mas and Movistar, the wait was worth it. After years of near-misses, the Vuelta title finally belongs to a Spaniard once more.
