Piero Ausilio, who spent 28 years at Inter and left his role as sporting director on September 2, is close to joining Tottenham in the same capacity. Multiple Italian outlets, including La Gazzetta dello Sport, report that a deal is imminent and that it is a matter of "when" rather than "if" Ausilio moves to North London.
Ausilio joined Inter as a youth-team secretary in the late 1990s and rose through the ranks to become sporting director, a position he held for over a decade. During his tenure, the Nerazzurri won three Serie A titles, three Coppa Italia and three Supercoppa Italiana trophies, reached two Champions League finals and one Europa League final. He was replaced by his long-time deputy Dario Baccin.
At Tottenham, Ausilio would work alongside head coach Roberto De Zerbi, who arrived at the club last season. He would become the second Italian sporting director at Spurs following Fabio Paratici, who has since moved to Fiorentina. The squad already features several players with Italian connections, including Sandro Tonali — who joined from Newcastle in the summer for a reported €108 million, a record fee for an Italian player — as well as Destiny Udogie and former Juventus men Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur.
