Formula 1 has officially confirmed its 2027 calendar, featuring 24 grands prix across 22 countries and a record 10 sprint races, including the first-ever sprint weekend at Monaco.
The announcement, made on September 16, 2026, follows approval by the FIA World Motor Sport Council. Pre-season testing will take place in Bahrain from February 24-27 before the championship returns to the Middle East for a double-header season opener, starting with the Bahrain Grand Prix on March 14 and the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix a week later.
With Bahrain reclaiming its traditional slot as the opening race after being pushed back in 2026 due to Ramadan, Australia becomes the third race of the season, forming a triple-header with Japan and China.
Sprint Expansion to 10 Events
The headline change is the expansion of sprint races from six to 10, with Monaco hosting a sprint for the first time. The decision is certain to raise eyebrows at a circuit where overtaking is virtually impossible, though the format will offer a second qualifying session widely considered the highlight of the Monaco weekend.
Other sprint venues include Bahrain, Australia, Japan, Canada, Great Britain, Italy, Brazil, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi. The sprint at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix marks the first time the format has been used in the first race of an F1 season. Monza will host a sprint for the first time since the format was introduced in 2021.
Return of Familiar Venues
Two former F1 venues return to the calendar: Portimao will host the Portuguese Grand Prix on June 20, while Istanbul returns with the Turkish Grand Prix on October 3. The Turkish race forms the middle of a second triple-header, sitting between the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on September 26 and the Singapore Grand Prix on October 10.
Barcelona and the Netherlands have both dropped off the 2027 calendar.
Season Structure
A third and final triple-header comprises races in the United States, Mexico, and Brazil. The season concludes with a Middle Eastern double-header in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, with the finale taking place on December 12.
F1 president Stefano Domenicali said: "The 2027 calendar brings together some of the most iconic circuits and vibrant cities in the world, creating an incredible stage for another unforgettable season of Formula 1. We are thrilled to welcome Portugal and Türkiye to the championship and to expand Sprint racing to ten events."
FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem added: "With twenty-four Grands Prix across five continents, the return of Portugal and Türkiye, and the opportunity for an expanded Sprint programme, the calendar combines tradition, innovation, and fan engagement."
2026 Season Update
F1's plans for the remainder of the 2026 season remain unchanged despite ongoing instability in the Middle East. It is understood that a contingency plan would see Imola step in to replace either Qatar or Abu Dhabi if F1 is forced to cancel one or both of the final races.
