Germany pulled off one of the great EuroVolley comebacks, recovering from two sets down to beat hosts Bulgaria 3-2 (21-25, 21-25, 25-19, 25-23, 15-12) in a dramatic Round of 16 match at Arena 8888 in Sofia. The result eliminates the host nation in front of 12,198 spectators and sends Germany through to a quarter-final against Poland.
For two sets, Bulgaria looked unstoppable. Their service game was devastating — five aces in the first set and four in the second — while Germany's positive reception plummeted from 35% in the opening set to just 17% in the second. Bulgaria's coach Gianlorenzo Blengini had his team executing the gameplan to perfection, keeping Germany's attackers out of system and building a commanding 2-0 lead.
But the match turned on its axis in the third set. Germany's bench message was simple: survive. And survive they did. The visitors improved their reception to 38%, limited Bulgaria to just one ace, and attacked at 56% efficiency to take the set 25-19. The momentum had shifted, and Bulgaria could feel it.
The fourth set was the most dramatic of the match. Bulgaria led 16-14 and appeared to have restored control, but Tim Peter's devastating serving run swung the set. Germany clawed back from four points down, pulling away to 22-18 before Bulgaria rallied to 22-21. The hosts could not close it out — Germany held on to win 25-23 and force a decisive fifth set.
The tiebreak stayed tight until 8-8, when Germany won two consecutive rallies to seize a 10-8 lead they would never surrender. At 14-12, a service error from Martin Atanasov sealed Bulgaria's fate. It was a cruel ending for a team that had been undone by the very weapon that had built their advantage: a late collapse of four consecutive service errors handed Germany the match.
Erik Röhrs led Germany with 20 points, while Anton Brehme delivered a remarkable attacking display — 11 kills from 12 attempts for a 92% efficiency rate. Tobias Brand contributed 13 points. For Bulgaria, Alex Nikolov was the match's top scorer with 23 points, including eight break points, but it was not enough. Asparuh Asparuhov added 13 and Alex Grozdanov contributed 10.
Germany's attack efficiency of 53% ultimately outlasted Bulgaria's 48%, despite the hosts recording more aces (13 to 11). The statistical story was clear: Bulgaria's serve dominated early but faded when it mattered most, and Germany's composure under pressure proved decisive.
The win sets up a quarter-final clash with Poland, while Bulgaria's EuroVolley campaign ends in heartbreak on home soil.
