The Hungaroring has officially named its 14 corners in celebration of the Hungarian Grand Prix's 40th anniversary, with Formula 1 icons Lewis Hamilton, Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna among the legends honoured.
The circuit, which has hosted the Hungarian Grand Prix since 1986, selected the names from thousands of fan suggestions submitted during last year's race weekend. A panel of motorsport professionals and media representatives reviewed the entries to finalise the list.
Lewis Hamilton, the most successful driver in Hungaroring history with eight victories and nine pole positions, has Turn 2 named after him. The seven-time world champion also took part in a handprint ceremony alongside Nigel Mansell and Jean Alesi, with their casts set to be permanently installed in the circuit's run-off area.
Turn 1 is named Piquet after Nelson Piquet, who won the first two Hungarian Grands Prix and executed one of F1's most celebrated overtakes — passing Senna around the outside at that very corner in 1986. Michael Schumacher, who secured his fourth drivers' world championship at the Hungaroring in 2001, lends his name to Turn 12. Ayrton Senna, who took the circuit's first-ever pole position in 1986 and won three times at the venue, is commemorated with Turn 13.
Local heritage is woven into several names. Turn 3 is called Spring, referencing the Valley of the Three Springs where the circuit sits. Turn 5 honours Mogyoród, the town adjacent to the track. Turns 6 and 7, named Driving Center, pay tribute to Hungary's first driver training facility. Budapest is represented by Turns 8 and 9 (Buda and Pest), while Turn 10 carries the name Danube after the city's iconic river.
Turn 11 finally makes official the nickname "Alesi" — already used by Hungarian fans since Jean Alesi's dramatic 1995 crash. The final corner, Turn 14, is named Szisz after Ferenc Szisz, the Hungarian-born engineer who won the very first Grand Prix in 1906.
The named corners will debut during this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring.
