Inter abandon Djed Spence pursuit as Tottenham demand €47m fee

Inter have decided to end their interest in Tottenham Hotspur full-back Djed Spence, with the €47 million (£40m) asking price deemed prohibitive as the Nerazzurri continue their search for a replacement for Denzel Dumfries.

According to Sport Mediaset's Orazio Accomando, the Serie A side have stepped back from a deal for the 25-year-old England international despite being in the market for a right wing-back following Dumfries' departure. The Dutchman's release clause was activated by Real Madrid earlier in the summer, leaving a significant gap in Cristian Chivu's system.

Spence, who spent the 2024-25 season on loan at Genoa before returning to Tottenham, had caught Inter's attention with his performances at the 2026 World Cup under Thomas Tuchel. The full-back played a key role in England's run to the bronze medal match in Miami, demonstrating the attacking verve and defensive improvement that made him an attractive prospect.

However, Tottenham's valuation — understood to be around €47m — has proved a stumbling block. Inter are balancing multiple squad rebuild priorities this summer and are reluctant to commit such a significant portion of their budget to a single position.

The Nerazzurri's right wing-back search has been frustrating. Marco Palestra, the young Italian who was initially identified as the primary target, was snagged by Chelsea for €60m earlier in the window. A deal for Union Saint-Gilloise winger Anan Khalaili also fell through after medical concerns emerged.

For now, Inter's recruitment team continues to scan the market for an affordable option capable of filling Dumfries' shoes in Chivu's 3-4-2-1 system.
