Inter Milan have made Tottenham Hotspur full-back Djed Spence their primary target to replace Denzel Dumfries, but face a battle to convince manager Roberto De Zerbi to part with the England international.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, relayed by Football Italia, the Spurs coach was deeply impressed by Spence's performances at the 2026 World Cup and is reluctant to lose him unless an irresistible offer comes in. Spence showcased his versatility during the tournament — comfortable on either flank, blessed with pace and sharp defensive instincts, most notably keeping Giuliano Simeone quiet in the semi-final against Argentina.
The former Genoa loanee is said to be keen on a return to Serie A, and Inter remain in pole position to secure his signature, with developments expected this week.
The financial hurdle, however, is significant. Tottenham are holding firm at a valuation above €40 million, emboldened by having Pedro Porro as their established right-back and by the inflated English market. The same dynamic has complicated Inter's pursuit of Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones.
Should De Zerbi and Spurs refuse to budge, Inter have mapped out alternatives. One carries sentimental weight: Ivan Perisic, released early from his PSV contract, could return to the Nerazzurri. The other is a different profile entirely — John Stones, the England centre-back now a free agent after leaving Manchester City. Stones played every minute of a strong World Cup campaign showing no signs of physical decline, and would represent a shrewd, cost-free addition, even if his attributes differ from the wide reinforcement Spence would bring.
