Joint MotoGP championship leader Jorge Martin will undergo a crucial arm pump evaluation on Wednesday ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix, a medical appointment that could reshape the 2026 title battle.
Martin, level on 274 points with Marc Marquez at the top of the standings, revealed the condition that cost him victory at the San Marino Grand Prix last Sunday at Misano. The 2024 world champion led comfortably before forearm tightness forced him into a late fade, dropping him from first to fifth on the Aprilia.
"I had arm pump back in 2019 and had surgery for it then," Martin explained after the Red Bull Grand Prix of San Marino and the Riviera di Rimini. "I haven't had any problems since then. But I know from other riders that the problems returned years later and they had to have another operation."
The evaluation at the Red Bull Ring will determine whether surgical intervention is necessary. Should Martin require an operation, the recovery window is brutally tight. A procedure now would likely rule him out of the Japan-Indonesia double-header in the first weeks of October — two races at a critical juncture in the championship, with only three weekends remaining before the season finale.
Martin conceded the arm issue looms large over his title ambitions. "I've got the pace, the bike and the team; I feel ready for the World Championship title — nothing's missing," he said. "But now there are questions about my arm. If the problems resurface, they might cost me the championship. Or maybe not — I don't know."
The Spaniard is determined to use this weekend's race as a diagnostic benchmark rather than a source of anxiety. "I don't think I'll have any problems in Austria; that'll be a good test. If I don't have any difficulties there, we can carry on and put the matter behind us," he said.
The Red Bull Ring is historically one of Aprilia's stronger venues, and Martin drew encouragement from the pace he showed at Misano despite the physical difficulties. "I had a good feeling, a good pace, and I was riding the way I like to up until I began to feel my forearm tightening up," he said.
Aprilia team-mate Marco Bezzecchi, who crashed out of the lead at Misano and now sits 33 points from the top, will also be looking to bounce back on a circuit where the RS-GP has traditionally performed well. Martin's focus remains firmly on the present. "Now we need to focus on Austria, which is a track I like," he said. "We'll try to transform that pain into grit."
