Karolina Muchova will miss the WTA 1000 tournament in Toronto after undergoing surgery in the days that followed her run to the Wimbledon final, with the Czech world No. 6 expecting to be back on court in time for the US Open.
The 29-year-old confirmed her withdrawal from the National Bank Open, the Canadian event running from 2-13 August, in a message to fans on Instagram. In it, she revealed she had gone under the knife shortly after losing the all-Czech Wimbledon final to Linda Noskova.
"I had to undergo a small surgery that will keep me off the court for a few weeks," Muchova wrote. "Everything went well, and I'm already working on my recovery. Thank you for all your messages and support. I'll be back soon."
The surgery, Muchova stressed, had been planned. Speaking after she and Wimbledon champion Noskova were welcomed by Czech president Petr Pavel, she offered a first detailed update on her recovery: "The operation I had was part of my plan. Everything went well. Now I just need to recover, and I won't play for three or four weeks. But I should be ready for the US Open."
Missing Toronto also means skipping the start of the North American hard-court swing, a genuine blow for a player who was set to make her debut in the Canadian city. "I'm sad to miss Toronto this year," she added. "I was really looking forward to making my debut there, but recovery comes first."
Her participation in Cincinnati, which begins on 13 August, remains uncertain, with Muchova yet to officially withdraw from the WTA 1000 event there. The US Open starts on 30 August, leaving her more than a month to complete her recovery. While she is expected to be physically cleared well before Flushing Meadows, arriving in New York without a competitive match since Wimbledon would be far from ideal preparation for a player still chasing a first Grand Slam title.
Muchova, who also reached the Wimbledon final in 2023, was a finalist in Cincinnati in 2023 and remains a regular presence near the top of the rankings.
