Reigning world champion Lando Norris secured his first Formula 1 victory of the 2026 season with a commanding drive at the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday, overcoming early team tension and capitalising on team-mate Oscar Piastri's late retirement to take the chequered flag at the Hungaroring.
The McLaren driver started from pole position but lost the lead at Turn 2 on the opening lap when he ran wide defending from Piastri, who executed a clever cut-back to sweep ahead. What followed was a tense intra-team battle that dominated the first half of the 70-lap race.
Norris, visibly faster in clear air, grew frustrated on team radio as he urged McLaren to let him through. The team initially resisted, pitting Piastri first at half-distance. But the decisive moment came when Piastri, on fresher tyres, caught traffic and collided with Carlos Sainz's Williams while attempting to lap him at Turn 3. The contact cost Piastri momentum, allowing Norris to leapfrog him after the second round of pit stops.
Piastri's misery was compounded on Lap 56 when a gearbox failure forced him to stop trackside, triggering a Virtual Safety Car. That neutralisation reshuffled the final order: Max Verstappen held firm to take second for Red Bull, while Kimi Antonelli climbed to third for Mercedes, extending his championship lead to 50 points over Lewis Hamilton.
Hamilton endured another frustrating afternoon. The seven-time champion, already carrying a three-place grid penalty for impeding Piastri in qualifying, was hit with a five-second time penalty for speeding in the pit lane under the VSC. That demoted him from an on-track fourth to fifth behind Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc.
"I don't know what happened, to be honest. I just kept losing the rear," Norris said of his poor start. "My pace today was probably some of the best pace I've ever had. The car was beautiful to drive and I felt very confident, so a great race."
Isack Hadjar finished sixth for Red Bull ahead of George Russell, who recovered from an anti-stall issue at the start that dropped him to 19th. Racing Bulls scored a double points finish with Liam Lawson eighth and Arvid Lindblad tenth, split by Audi's Nico Hulkenberg in ninth.
The result leaves Norris eighth in the drivers' standings but with momentum heading into the summer break. The 2026 season resumes with the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort on August 23.
