Luka Modric renews with Milan until 2027: one-year option exercised

Luka Modric will continue his Milan adventure. Modric, who turns 41 on September 9, will earn €3.5 million per season plus bonuses — the same salary as his first year in red and black. The Ballon d'Or winner will join his teammates directly in Australia for the pre-season tour, skipping the Milan training camp after spending his holidays in his hometown of Zadar.

In his first season at Milan, after leaving Real Madrid as a free agent in the summer of 2025, Modric made 37 appearances across all competitions with two goals and three assists, logging 2,816 minutes on the pitch. A fractured cheekbone sidelined him for several games, but he returned ahead of schedule, showing characteristic determination.

At the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Modric started all four of Croatia's matches, proving he still has the energy to compete at the highest level. However, the Croatian captain has announced he will retire from international duty after the Nations League match against Spain on October 6.

Under new head coach Amorim, Modric is expected to play a key role for Milan in 2026-2027, serving as a leader both on and off the pitch. He chose to stay despite the disappointment of missing out on Champions League qualification, with his sights set on the Europa League trophy — one of the few major honours missing from his glittering collection.

Family considerations also influenced his decision: wife Vanja and children Ivano, Ema and Sofia have settled well in Milan and find the city welcoming and stimulating.
