Matthew Brennan delivered a stunning sprint victory on stage 2 of the Vuelta a España, powering past the sport's biggest names to claim his first Grand Tour win at just 21 years old. The Visma-Lease a Bike rider outsprinted Pau Miquel and race leader Tadej Pogačar at the end of a 202.1-kilometre route from Monaco to Manosque, taking the stage and the Best Young Rider's white jersey.
After more than 200 kilometres of rolling terrain through southern France featuring 3,020 metres of climbing, the finale came alive when Wout van Aert — Brennan's teammate and overall contender — launched a fierce attack with two kilometres remaining on the uphill run into Manosque. Only Pogačar could follow the Belgian's burst of speed, and the pair briefly opened a gap on the reduced bunch.
But the move was neutralised inside the final kilometre, and it was Finn Fisher-Black of Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe who opened the sprint early. Brennan, perfectly positioned on Fisher-Black's wheel, waited for the right moment and then unleashed a devastating turn of speed that left everyone else standing. Pau Miquel held on for second, with Pogačar crossing in third and Mads Pedersen in fourth.
"We started off with the ambition of trying to get Wout in the red jersey today, and we said there's a nice opportunity to attack in the final," Brennan said after the stage. "That's exactly what happened; the guys in front sat up, Christophe did a great job of guiding me all the way through the hecticness of that, and I'm super happy to finish it off."
Ethan Hayter had animated the stage from the breakaway, taking six bonus seconds at the intermediate sprint to briefly move into the virtual overall lead. But the Soudal Quick-Step rider was poorly positioned in the final approach and finished on a gap to the leaders, missing out on the red jersey for a second successive day.
Pogačar retained the leader's jersey with a nine-second advantage over Van Aert heading into stage 3, the first mountain test of this year's Vuelta, which finishes at the Font-Romeu ski resort. Brennan's victory moved him up to third overall and into the white jersey as the best-placed young rider.
The 21-year-old, who only turned 21 a couple of weeks ago, had already shown his sprinting talent at the Vuelta a Burgos earlier this month, winning two stages including an uphill finish. His transition to Grand Tour level has been seamless, and his Manosque triumph marks him as one of the most exciting young talents in the peloton.
