Michela Monari, the former Italy international middle blocker who was one of the leading figures of Italian volleyball in the 1990s, has died at the age of 53. Her death was announced on Friday 31 July, prompting an outpouring of tributes across the Italian volleyball world.
Born in 1973, Monari made her mark with the Azzurre as a junior, winning bronze at the 1992 Under-19 European Championship before breaking into the senior national team. She went on to earn 79 caps for Italy, appearing at the 1994 World Championship in Brazil and the 1997 European Championship in Brno.
At club level, Monari built a distinguished career in Serie A, playing for Bologna, Modena, Rubiera and Reggio Emilia. Her most successful spell came with Anthesis Modena, where she won the CEV Cup Winners' Cup three times.
After retiring from playing, Monari stayed in the sport as a coach, devoting herself to developing young players in the years before her death. Her daughter, Lisa Monari Gamba, has followed in her footsteps as a spiker: she was part of the Italy Under-18 side that recently won the European Under-18 Championship, where she was named the tournament's MVP.
Tributes flowed in from across the sport. iVolley Magazine wrote that Italian volleyball was in mourning for a player who had given so much to the Azzurre, and extended its condolences to Monari's family, her daughter Lisa and all who knew her. Volley News remembered her as one of the protagonists of Italian volleyball in the 1990s, outstanding at both club and international level, and noted how she had passed her passion for the game on to her daughter.
Monari's passing leaves a void in the Italian volleyball community, which has rallied around her family. She is survived by her daughter Lisa.
