Naomi Osaka ended Leylah Fernandez's National Bank Open on Sunday, beating the last Canadian left in the women's singles draw 6-4, 6-4 in the third round — the round of 16 — at Sobeys Stadium in Toronto.
Osaka struck first, breaking in the third game of the opening set, but Fernandez fought straight back to level at 2-2. The four-time Grand Slam champion broke again for 4-3 and held firm to close out the set. The second set followed a tighter pattern, with both players holding serve until Osaka seized her chance at 3-3 and served out the match, finishing with 15 winners.
The defeat brought Canada's singles campaign at the WTA 1000 event to an end. Fernandez, carrying the hopes of a partisan home crowd, had reached the third round by beating Renata Zarazua and then stunning French Open champion Mirra Andreeva in one of the best wins of her season. Her year had been testing — she arrived in Toronto with a 13-20 record and a Madrid quarter-final as her best result — but she saved her best tennis for home. As she left the court, the crowd rose to give her a standing ovation.
