Napoli have confirmed that Italy international defender Alessandro Buongiorno requires surgery to repair the medial meniscus root in his right knee, a procedure that will sideline the centre-back for several months.
The 27-year-old, who joined Napoli from Torino for €36.5 million plus add-ons in the summer of 2024, had been managing knee discomfort throughout the latter part of last season. Initially, both club and player hoped that conservative treatment would resolve the issue. However, persistent problems during pre-season testing at Dimaro prompted a referral to a specialist in Barcelona.
Following that consultation, Napoli released an official statement confirming that surgery is the only viable course of action. The operation, which will address the root of the medial meniscus in his right knee, is expected to take place in Barcelona within the coming days.
According to Sky Sport Italia, Buongiorno is likely to be sidelined for a period of two to three months — a significant blow for both Napoli and the Italy national team. The timing is particularly challenging for the Partenopei, who are preparing for the 2026-27 Serie A campaign as well as their return to Champions League football after a one-season absence.
Buongiorno had established himself as a cornerstone of Antonio Conte's defence since his arrival from Torino.
