Lando Norris claimed his second consecutive Formula 1 victory at a rain-hit Dutch Grand Prix, the last ever held at Zandvoort, as championship leader Max Verstappen suffered a frightening crash on the opening lap that brought out the red flags.
Norris led from pole position when the lights went out after a pre-race rain shower left the Circuit Zandvoort damp but not wet enough for wet tyres. The McLaren driver initially controlled the start, but Verstappen — starting on the grid of his final home race — lost the rear of his Red Bull on a damp patch at the end of the first lap and slammed head-on into the concrete barrier.
The four-time world champion immediately radioed that he was unhurt, but his car bounced back across the track in front of the oncoming field, triggering an instant red flag. Race control halted proceedings while marshals cleared the wrecked Red Bull from the track surface. The result does little to dent Antonelli's championship advantage. The Mercedes driver still leads the standings by 59 points from Russell and Hamilton, who are level on points. Norris, despite his resurgence with back-to-back wins in Hungary and Zandvoort, remains 83 points adrift — a deficit that keeps his title defence alive mathematically but leaves little margin for error in the remaining rounds.
For Verstappen, the outcome was a bitter pill. The Dutchman had signed a new contract with Red Bull earlier in the weekend and been hoping to sign off from his home race with a strong result. Instead, the damp conditions that greeted the field proved his undoing, ending his race before it had truly begun.
