Ajax have completed the signing of Germany midfielder Julian Brandt on a free transfer, the Amsterdam club announced on Friday evening. The 30-year-old has signed a three-year contract that runs until 30 June 2029.
Brandt arrives after seven seasons at Borussia Dortmund, where he established himself as one of the Bundesliga's most consistent playmakers. Before his time in Dortmund, the Bremen-born attacking midfielder spent six seasons in the Bayer Leverkusen first team, having previously played for the German side.
The former Germany international brings 48 senior caps to the Eredivisie, and his arrival is expected to give Ajax the creative spark they sought throughout the summer window.
Technical director Jordi Cruijff said the deal had been months in the making and believes Ajax have secured a player of genuine pedigree.
"Julian has chosen Ajax and we are absolutely delighted," Cruijff said. "We have been in contact for several months and he is a player who also had the opportunity to sign for other clubs. With Julian we secure a profile of international level, blessed with huge experience and a fantastic mentality. I am convinced he will bring a notable step up in quality to our squad."
Brandt becomes Ajax's ninth German player in the 21st century, following in the footsteps of Diant Ramaj, Heiko Westermann and Amin Younes. His arrival also brings an end to Leeds United's long pursuit of the midfielder, who had been a target for the English club during the window.
The 1996-born playmaker is the marquee arrival of Ajax's summer as the club look to re-establish themselves at the top of Dutch football. With his experience and international pedigree, the Amsterdam side believe he will add a decisive edge to their attacking midfield.
