Tadej Pogačar has abandoned the Vuelta a España 2026 in harrowing fashion. The race leader in the red jersey crashed heavily during stage 8 (Puçol to Xeraco, 171 km) with roughly 31 km remaining, in a high-speed incident that struck down several riders. The Slovenian champion could not remount and was carried away in an ambulance with injuries to his left shoulder and face.
The crash occurred when Pogačar clipped the shoulder of another rider and lost control of his handlebars. The UAE Team Emirates-XRG leader tried to get back on his bike after a few minutes but cried out in pain and grimaced when he touched the frame. His teammates waited by the roadside as the peloton rolled on without them.
"Sadly Tadej Pogačar has been forced out following a crash on stage eight," UAE Team Emirates confirmed on X. The 27-year-old — winner of five Tour de France titles and a Giro d'Italia — had been targeting overall victory in Spain to join the elite group of riders who have won all three Grand Tours. It is the first time in his career that Pogačar has failed to finish a Grand Tour.
The implications are staggering. The most dominant rider of the modern era has seen his dream of completing the Triple Crown vanish in an instant. Pogačar, who had won three stages and held a lead of 3 minutes and 50 seconds over second-placed Enric Mas, is now out of the race.
At the finish, French sprinter Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) won the bunch sprint ahead of Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) and Jordi Meeus (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe). The 34-year-old claimed his first Grand Tour stage win in his career.
The red jersey passed to Enric Mas (Movistar), who became the first Spaniard to lead the Vuelta's general classification since Jesús Herrada in 2018. At the podium, a sombre Mas accepted the red jersey but did not wear it, holding it in front of him instead. "I hope he gets better quickly," he said. "We've still got a few races left and I hope he'll be in good shape for them."
The general classification after stage 8 shows Mas leading by 1 minute and 11 seconds over Felix Gall (Decathlon CMA CGM), who is 22 seconds clear of Primoz Roglic. The race is blown wide open heading into a full week of mountain stages that begins Sunday with a summit finish at OHÁ.
It is the first time a Vuelta race leader has crashed out since Igor Anton on stage 14 in 2010. The comparison is painful: as then, the race has reopened completely and unpredictably.
Pogačar's withdrawal leaves a gaping hole in the 2026 Vuelta. The Slovenian was the race's protagonist, with three stage victories and a grip on the general classification that appeared unbreakable. The crash comes just two weeks before the Giro di Lombardia, the one-day classic Pogačar has won in each of the last two editions.
