International referee Aimee Barrett-Theron has stepped down from officiating with immediate effect to focus on treatment for breast cancer. The news was announced by World Rugby, which published a message of support from its chair, Brett Robinson.
«I know that I speak for the global rugby family in extending our love and support for Aimee as she begins her treatment,» Robinson said. «Aimee is an exemplar of the values of our sport, an exceptional role model and a wonderful person, who demonstrates a steely determination to be a top international referee.»
Barrett-Theron, one of the most recognisable faces in world officiating, thus hangs up her whistle at international level just as health becomes the priority. World Rugby extended the support of the entire rugby community to her and her family, underlining her role as a benchmark both on and off the field.
