George Russell claimed a commanding Sprint win at the 2026 Dutch Grand Prix, converting pole position into his third Sprint triumph of the season as rain clouds loomed but ultimately held off over Zandvoort.
The Mercedes driver made a strong launch when the 24-lap event got underway and, despite seeing his advantage ebb and flow at times, maintained a comfortable lead over Lando Norris as the laps progressed. While a fight unfolded behind for second place, Russell remained clear at the front and crossed the line in P1 just as the first drops of rain began to fall.
Charles Leclerc swooped past Norris on lap 18 to seize second for Ferrari, the Monegasque making his soft tyres last impressively well against the majority of the field who had opted for the medium compound. Norris ultimately took third, 5.196 seconds behind Russell, with championship leader Kimi Antonelli fourth in the other Mercedes — just 0.3s behind the McLaren at the chequered flag.
Oscar Piastri completed the top five in the second McLaren, holding off home hero Max Verstappen in the Red Bull. The Dutchman, cheered on by the orange-clad faithful, could manage no better than sixth, 10.5 seconds adrift — a disappointing result on a weekend where Red Bull's pace has been a question mark.
Lewis Hamilton was a distant seventh for Ferrari, his early challenge against Verstappen fading rapidly. Pierre Gasly brought the updated Alpine home in eighth for a useful points finish, while Gabriel Bortoleto just missed out in ninth for Audi.
The Sprint marked Russell's third pole-to-victory conversion this season and his second Sprint win overall, underlining a resurgence that has coincided with Mercedes' recent development push. With the championship race tightening between Antonelli and Norris, Russell's result adds another dimension to the title fight heading into Sunday's main event.
Weather conditions had been a concern throughout the weekend after Friday's mixed sessions, but the Sprint was run in dry, overcast conditions. The forecast for Sunday's race remains uncertain, with rain possible during the afternoon.
Lawson, standing in for the injured Isack Hadjar at Red Bull, finished 11th on his first outing of the season under the new regulations. Yuki Tsunoda, taking Lawson's seat at Racing Bulls, was 13th in his first race-weekend outing with the 2026 car.
