George Russell resisted a late charge from Max Verstappen to claim a lights-to-flag victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, as a restart collision involving Lando Norris tightened Kimi Antonelli's grip on the championship lead.
Russell had looked set for a comfortable win after building an 11-second advantage over the field in the first half of the race. But two safety car interventions — the first triggered by Alex Albon's crash on lap 31 and the second by Valtteri Bottas's stranded Cadillac late on — erased his cushion and set up a tense finish.
Verstappen, who had surged from eighth on the grid to third by lap seven, benefited from the chaos at the first restart when Franco Colapinto locked up and slid into Pierre Gasly, whose Alpine was shunted into the path of Norris. The collision eliminated both Alpine cars and left the championship-contending Norris unable to continue, a blow that all but ends his title hopes.
With Norris out and the field bunched for the second restart, Verstappen was glued to Russell's rear wing for the final 13 laps. The Red Bull driver closed to within striking distance as the chequered flag approached, and only a desperate lift from Russell under yellow flags for Bottas's incident prevented the pass — though the Mercedes driver lost his turbo boost on the final lap and crossed the line just 0.196 seconds ahead.
The margin was the closest green-flag finish since Michael Schumacher beat Rubens Barrichello by 0.011 seconds at the 2002 United States Grand Prix.
"I thought 'this is not going to be easy' and he drove incredibly at the end," Russell said. "When the yellow flag came out, I lifted off the power and when I went back, I had no turbo, so then I had no power and Max almost got me at the line. That would have been a real shame but all in all an incredible weekend."
Isack Hadjar completed the podium on his return from a three-race absence caused by a wrist injury, sealing Red Bull's first double-podium since the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix. Charles Leclerc took fourth for Ferrari after dropping back from second in the early stages, while Lewis Hamilton finished where he started in sixth, lacking pace throughout.
Antonelli, who had crashed in qualifying and started 16th, fought back to finish fifth — a drive that preserved his championship cushion despite Russell's victory. The result cuts Russell's deficit to 66 points with eight rounds remaining, while Hamilton sits 103 points back and Norris 116 off the lead. Mercedes also extended their constructors' advantage to 160 points over Ferrari.
Arvid Lindblad finished seventh after overtaking Esteban Ocon on the final lap, with Oliver Bearman completing a double-points finish for Haas in eighth. Carlos Sainz took the final point for Williams despite a five-place grid penalty and an ill-timed pit stop before the first safety car.
A disappointing weekend for Aston Martin ended with both Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll failing to finish after technical issues.
