George Russell claimed victory at the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix, held on Sunday 28 June at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg. The Mercedes driver completed all 71 laps in 1:26:37.979, withstanding a late charge from Max Verstappen to take his second win of the season.
Run in extreme heat, with more than 60°C inside the cockpit, the race delivered a string of close battles. Verstappen, who started fifth, fought back to second, finishing 1.611 seconds adrift — the four-time world champion's best result of the year. Russell's Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli completed the podium 1.986 seconds back, consolidating his lead in the drivers' standings.
For Russell the win carried real psychological weight after a campaign dogged by misfortune and the strong form of his team-mate. Crossing the line, the Briton joked about his drinks system failing in the heat, while his race engineer Marcus Dudley calmly reminded him of the bottle waiting on the podium.
