Sinner Withdraws from Montreal Masters 1000, Djokovic Also Out

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has officially withdrawn from the Masters 1000 tournament in Montreal, which runs from August 2-13, the tournament announced on social media. Novak Djokovic will also miss the event, leaving the Canadian Open without two of the biggest names in tennis.

Sinner, fresh from his Wimbledon triumph, will miss the opportunity to win all nine ATP Masters 1000 titles in a single season after already capturing Indian Wells, Miami, Monte-Carlo, Madrid and Rome in 2026. The 24-year-old Italian had won five of the first six Masters 1000 events of the season, a feat previously achieved only by Djokovic in 2015.

With both players out, Alexander Zverev becomes the top seed for the Canadian Open, while home favourite Felix Auger-Aliassime moves up to No. 2 seed. Last year, Sinner also withdrew from the tournament before his scheduled participation; Ben Shelton went on to win the title, defeating Karen Khachanov in the final.

The world No. 1, who had not lost a match on hard courts since last year, is now expected to turn his attention to the American hard-court swing. His return is anticipated at the Cincinnati Masters 1000 (August 12-19), ahead of the US Open (August 24 - September 6), where he defends the semi-final he reached in 2025.
