Udinese have completed the signing of Georgian full-back Mergim Vojvoda from Como, a deal sporting director Gian Luca Nani admits even he struggles to explain. AC Milan and Juventus had both been linked with the Georgian, who was unveiled at the club's summer media day in Lienz.
"When we signed him, someone in football called me asking how we had managed to get him, because he is really strong," Nani said. "He told me he could play for Juventus or Milan — and I'd add Udinese. It's a signing that has made waves among people in the game. We don't even know how we got him, but he's here."
Nani described the former Como player as a fighter with a strong sense of belonging, nicknamed "Rambo" by fans for his resemblance and his grit. "Before a serious injury, he was supposed to be Georgia's new star, not Kvaratskhelia," the director added. "It was time for him to try a new experience and we didn't want to lose him, so we brought him to Udine."
Vojvoda, who helped Como reach the Champions League, said the club's faith convinced him to make the switch. "I felt great trust from the club and that's important to me. I'm delighted and I want to do something beautiful, something better than in the past," he told Sky Sport.
The Georgian thanked former Como coach Cesc Fabregas for relaunching his career. "I have to thank Fabregas, he gave me so much trust. There were lots of young players with potential who needed an example, and that's what I tried to be," he said.
On his role under Kosta Runjaic, Vojvoda explained: "We spoke and he's happy to have me. I can play on the right, on the left and as a centre-back. Personally, I prefer playing as a left-sided full-back."
General director Franco Collavino added: "Vojvoda is a player of great international experience who contributed a lot to Como's Champions League qualification. In one word, he brings mentality."
The club's 130th anniversary gives the move extra meaning. "Udinese are a great club and this year even more so, since we celebrate 130 years," Vojvoda said. "I'm ready to do what the coach asks. I can play in many roles, my aim is to lead the team and I like winning."
Asked about Nicolò Zaniolo, Vojvoda added: "We know he has great quality and can help the team. I hope we get on well."
