Jannik Sinner, numero 1 del mondo e campione di Wimbledon, e Novak Djokovic hanno ufficialmente annunciato il ritiro dal National Bank Open di Montreal, Masters 1000 in programma dal 2 al 13 agosto. Il forfait dei due big lascia il torneo canadese senza due dei suoi principali protagonisti, sollevando nuovamente il dibattito sul calendario ATP.
Sinner ha dichiarato di dare priorità alla salute dopo l'impegno di Wimbledon, dove ha battuto Alexander Zverev in finale. Con questa rinuncia, l'azzurro non potrà completare l'impresa del "Calendar Golden Masters" — vincere tutti e nove i Masters 1000 in una stagione — dopo aver trionfato nei cinque disputati finora nel 2026, per un totale di sei 1000 consecutivi considerando anche il titolo a Parigi-Bercy di fine 2025.
In termini di ranking, Sinner non perderà nulla, dato che anche lo scorso anno rinunciò alla partecipazione all'Open del Canada. Il cinque volte campione Slam tornerà in campo a Cincinnati, dove forse rivedremo anche Carlos Alcaraz, ancora in ripresa da un infortunio al polso che lo tiene fuori da aprile.
"Siamo ovviamente molto delusi che Jannik e Novak non si uniranno a noi a Montreal quest'anno, specialmente dopo che si sono ritirati anche dal torneo dell'anno scorso a Toronto," ha dichiarato Valerie Tetreault, direttrice del torneo. "Rispettiamo le loro decisioni e comprendiamo che, con un calendario così impegnativo, la salute dei giocatori deve rimanere la priorità."
"Detto questo, crediamo che la frequenza di questi ritiri all'ultimo minuto negli ultimi anni sollevi un problema più ampio per il nostro sport. I Masters 1000 sono tra i tornei di punta del circuito e i tifosi hanno il diritto di aspettarsi di vedere i migliori al mondo competere. Siamo già in discussione con l'ATP per garantire che questo tema riceva la dovuta considerazione," ha aggiunto Tetreault.
A Montreal, Alexander Zverev sarà la testa di serie numero 1, mentre Flavio Cobolli sarà la testa di serie n.7. Felix Auger-Aliassime sarà la seconda testa di serie.
"We firmly believe adjustments are needed in the near future to better protect the integrity of our Masters 1000 events," ha concluso la direttrice del torneo.

Sinner and Djokovic Withdraw from Montreal Masters, Schedule Debate Intensifies
World number one and Wimbledon champion Jannik Sinner, alongside Novak Djokovic, have officially withdrawn from the National Bank Open in Montreal, a Masters 1000 event scheduled for August 2-13. The absence of two of the sport's biggest names has reignited debate about the congested ATP calendar.
Sinner said he was prioritising his health following his Wimbledon triumph over Alexander Zverev. The Italian's withdrawal means he cannot complete the Calendar Golden Masters — winning all nine Masters 1000 events in a single season — after triumphing in all five played so far in 2026, plus his Paris-Bercy title from late 2025 making it six consecutive Masters crowns.
The five-time Grand Slam champion will return to action in Cincinnati, where Carlos Alcaraz may also feature as he continues his recovery from a wrist injury that has kept him sidelined since April. Sinner loses no ranking points having also skipped the Canadian event last year.
"We are obviously very disappointed that Jannik and Novak won't be joining us in Montreal this year, especially after they also withdrew from last year's tournament in Toronto," said Canadian Open tournament director Valerie Tetreault. "We respect their decisions and understand that, with such a demanding schedule, players' health must remain the priority."
"That said, we believe the frequency of these last-minute withdrawals in the last few years raises a broader issue for our sport. Masters 1000 events are among the flagship tournaments on the tour, and fans rightfully expect to see the world's best compete. We are already in discussions with the ATP to ensure this matter receives serious consideration," Tetreault added.
Alexander Zverev will be the top seed in Montreal, with Felix Auger-Aliassime seeded second and Italy's Flavio Cobolli seeded seventh. The tournament precedes the Cincinnati Open and the US Open, the final Grand Slam of the season starting August 30.
