International referee Aimee Barrett-Theron has announced she is stepping down from officiating with immediate effect to concentrate on treatment for breast cancer. The news was made public by World Rugby on Wednesday, July 15, 2026.
South Africa's Barrett-Theron, one of the most recognisable figures in international match officiating, had long been a reference point across both women's and men's rugby. The decision to step away comes at a personal crossroads, and World Rugby was keen to stress the support of the entire rugby family.
Chair Brett Robinson extended a message of solidarity: "I know that I speak for the global rugby family in extending our love and support for Aimee as she begins her treatment." He described her as "an exemplar of the values of our sport, an exceptional role model and a wonderful person, who demonstrates a steely determination to be a top international referee. We know that she will approach her treatment in the same way."
