Arthur Gea's fairytale week at the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel OPPO ended with the biggest moment of his career. The 21-year-old Frenchman, ranked 127th in the world, upset defending champion Denis Shapovalov 6-3, 6-4 in Saturday night's final in Los Cabos to claim his first ATP Tour title at the first tour-level final of his career.
Gea's reward for a week in which he surprised himself day after day is a debut inside the Top 100: he will appear at No. 81 in Monday's ATP Rankings, having arrived in Mexico outside the world's top 120 and too low in the standings to gain direct entry into next week's National Bank Open in Montreal.
The Frenchman wrapped up the 90-minute final with a composed, aggressive display, saving six of the seven break points he faced while Shapovalov converted only four of his seven chances. Gea, who lost a Challenger final only two weeks ago, showed no sign of nerves on the biggest stage of his career and broke down the defending champion's resistance in straight sets on the hard courts of the Cabo Sports Complex.
