Rafael Jodar has broken into the ATP top 20 for the first time, capping a rise that has taken him from college tennis to the world's top 15 in barely seven months. The 19-year-old from Madrid, who left college in December to turn professional, climbed to a career-high No. 15 in the rankings published on Monday 3 August, becoming the 16th teenager this century to crack the top 20 before his 20th birthday.
The landmark follows a run to the final of the Mubadala DC Open in Washington, an ATP 500. Jodar dropped a set in each of his last two matches, coming from behind to beat Lorenzo Musetti 1-6 6-1 6-4 in the quarter-finals and Alejandro Tabilo 6-7(6) 6-4 6-4 in the semi-finals, after earlier dismissing Arthur Fils and Kei Nishikori in straight sets. Taylor Fritz ended his charge in the final, but the 330 points earned as runner-up lifted Jodar to 2,243 points and 11th place in the ATP Race to Turin.
Twelve months ago Jodar was ranked 540th in the world. He started 2026 at 168th after deciding in December to turn professional, and the results have arrived with startling speed: a first ATP title in Marrakech, quarter-finals at the Masters 1000 events in Madrid, Rome and Paris, and a third-round run at Wimbledon on his grass-court debut. He carried a 29-11 record for the season into the Washington final.
