Brescia Calcio has been declared bankrupt by the Tribunal of Brescia, bringing an abrupt end to a club that had been part of Italian football for 114 years.
The judicial liquidation — the Italian equivalent of bankruptcy — was ordered on Tuesday, coinciding with the 70th birthday of club president Massimo Cellino. The decision follows the club's exclusion from professional leagues earlier this summer after it failed to meet financial deadlines, and the subsequent opening of insolvency proceedings.
According to court documents, Brescia Calcio carried approximately €20 million in debt. A last-minute attempt to obtain a pre-arranged bankruptcy (concordato in bianco) was rejected by the tribunal. The reactivation of the club's registration number dated June 30 proved insufficient, even with the inclusion of around €6 million from Sandro Tonali's transfer fees through training compensation rights.
Two weeks ago, Brescia Calcio registered for the provincial Under-16 championship in an effort to keep the club's identity alive, but the tribunal was not convinced by the viability of the proposal. Creditors will now have until November 30 to submit their claims to the passive liabilities procedure.
From a sporting perspective, the Tonali funds will no longer flow to the club — instead, they will be directed to a FIFA solidarity fund. The bankruptcy also settles the long-running dispute over the 'V bianca' crest. Union Pasini had purchased the trademark from the Corioni-era Brescia, and Cellino will no longer be able to block its use on the club's shirts.
The ruling marks the end of a storied chapter in Italian football. Brescia Calcio, founded in 1911, had been a fixture in both Serie A and Serie B, producing talents like Andrea Pirlo, Roberto Baggio, and the aforementioned Tonali, who wore the famous blue-and-white stripes over the decades. With the bankruptcy confirmed, the club's future remains uncertain, though local amateur sides and consortiums have been whispered as potential heirs to the Brescia footballing tradition.
