Done Deal: Monza agree €2m plus bonuses with Benfica for striker Gustavo Varela

Newly-promoted Serie A side Monza have reached a full agreement with Benfica for Portuguese striker Gustavo Varela, according to [Football Italia](https://football-italia.net/done-monza-agreement-benfica-striker-varela/). The deal is worth €2m plus up to €1.5m in performance-related add-ons.

Varela, 21, is a Portugal Under-21 international with three goals in five caps at youth level. Coming through Benfica's academy system, he spent last season on loan at Gil Vicente in the Portuguese top flight, where he gained valuable first-team experience.

The young striker comes from a footballing family — he is the son of former Cape Verde international defender Fernando Varela, who played across Portugal, Romania and Turkey during his career.

Personal terms have already been agreed with Monza, and Varela is expected to fly to Italy this weekend for his medical ahead of signing a five-year contract until 2031. The deal sees Monza beat off competition from Venezia, Parma, PAOK Salonika and Paris FC, who had all expressed interest in the forward.

Monza continue their aggressive recruitment drive ahead of their Serie A return, having also secured Ricardo Mangas on loan from Sporting CP earlier this week.
