Elisabetta Cocciaretto will be the sole Italian representative in the main draw of the WTA 500 in Washington, D.C., following Jasmine Paolini's withdrawal due to a foot injury. The tournament runs from 27 July to 2 August at the William H.G. Fitzgerald Tennis Center.
The world No. 64, who recently reached the semifinals at the WTA 250 in Budapest, faces a challenging first-round match against Denmark's Clara Tauson, a powerful ball-striker. Should she advance, Cocciaretto would meet either American Emma Navarro or Sofia Kenin in the second round.
The Washington tournament offers Cocciaretto a valuable opportunity to earn ranking points ahead of the US Open, the final Grand Slam of the season beginning on 30 August.
