Emiliano Martínez has completed a surprise move to Chelsea, joining from Aston Villa for a fixed fee of £7.5 million. The Argentina international goalkeeper, who won the 2022 World Cup with his country, has signed a two-year contract at Stamford Bridge with an option to extend for a third season.
"Coming to Chelsea, for me and my family, was an easy decision to make and I'm just over the moon," Martínez said after the deal was finalised. "I can't wait to get started."
The 33-year-old is expected to make his debut against Brighton at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon, slotting directly into Enzo Maresca's squad as the club's new first-choice goalkeeper.
A bargain signing
The £7.5 million fee has been widely described as an "absolute bargain" for a goalkeeper of Martínez's pedigree. During his time at Villa Park, the Argentine established himself as one of the Premier League's most commanding shot-stoppers, earning recognition as one of the world's best in his position following his starring role in Argentina's World Cup triumph in Qatar.
His departure from Villa, however, has been on the cards for several weeks. The Midlands club have undergone a turbulent summer, losing Youri Tielemans, Lucas Digne, and Ezri Konsa before Martinez's exit. The club also sold Morgan Rogers earlier in the window. Unai Emery's side have moved to rebuild, bringing in Johan Manzambi as a record signing, alongside midfielder João Gomes, goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, and defender Matteo Ruggeri. Striker Nicolas Jackson is also close to joining from Chelsea in a deal worth up to £65 million.
Chelsea's goalkeeping shake-up
Martínez's arrival raises immediate questions about Chelsea's existing goalkeeping options. Robert Sánchez, who has been the club's primary keeper since arriving from Brighton, now faces competition for his place, while young Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders also sees his pathway potentially blocked.
For Chelsea, the signing represents an attempt to add experience and proven quality to a squad that Maresca is assembling with ambitions to compete at the top of the Premier League and in European competition this season.
Martínez, who has over 100 international caps for Argentina and won the Copa América in 2021 and 2024, brings a winner's mentality to Stamford Bridge. His penalty-saving abilities and commanding presence in the box are well known, having been instrumental in Argentina's knockout-stage runs at both the 2022 World Cup and the 2024 Copa América.
