Ismail Kartal dramatically announced his resignation at the post-match press conference following Fenerbahce's 1-1 Champions League draw with Roma on Thursday, but club president Aziz Yildirim swiftly overruled the decision — revealing the coach had been struck by a bottle during the match.
Kartal stunned reporters in the Istanbul press room with the words "You'll never see me again," declaring he was stepping down immediately to "clear the way for the club." The 65-year-old, who had returned for a fourth managerial spell at Fenerbahce in June, appeared visibly distressed as he brought an abrupt end to his tenure after just a few months.
But the resignation lasted only hours. Yildirim, speaking to journalists outside the stadium, confirmed Kartal would remain in charge. "As long as I'm here, he will be our coach," the president said, before revealing the incident that had triggered the outburst.
"Some fans threw a bottle at the coach's head this evening during the game. He is upset about it," Yildirim explained. "I just spoke to Ismail Kartal. He mentioned the bottle incident and he also complained about being under pressure."
In a remarkable admission, Kartal had confided in the president about taking medication to cope with the demands of the role. "He told me about the bottle incident, about this pressure. He said: 'I take medicine.' I take 30 pills myself," Yildirim said.
The president's response was unequivocal. "He doesn't need to say 'I will continue'. I am older than him. I said 'you will continue', and that's it. We are a family."
Kartal has deep roots at Fenerbahce, spending a decade as a player and managing the club three times before this season — first in 2014-15, then on an interim basis in 2021-22, and for a full campaign in 2023-24. He also served as assistant manager during two Turkish Super Lig title wins before returning in June.
The incident comes at a turbulent time for Fenerbahce. The club sit ninth in the Turkish top-flight after losing two of their opening four league games, and this season marks their first appearance in the Champions League's league phase in 18 years. The 1-1 draw with Roma, while a respectable result against strong opposition, appeared to be the final straw for a coach already under immense pressure.
Yildirim also used his remarks to address the wider culture around the club, accusing television pundits of fueling a negative narrative that "risks alienating people from the club or pushing them to resign."
