Giannis Antetokounmpo is officially a Miami Heat player. The two-time NBA MVP was introduced Thursday, July 16, 2026, at the Kaseya Center in Miami, meeting media and fans in what team president Pat Riley called "one of the great trades in Heat history."
The blockbuster deal, approved by the NBA on July 6, also brought Bobby Portis Jr. to South Beach, while the Milwaukee Bucks received Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel'el Ware, Lithuanian prospect Kasparas Jakučionis, and draft capital. After 13 seasons in Wisconsin, the "Greek Freak" turns the page.
"I need pressure at this time of my career," Antetokounmpo said at the press conference. "To go to the next level, I've got to get out of my comfort zone — and Miami was the place for me to be." The Greek superstar cited Messi, LeBron James, and Cristiano Ronaldo as blueprints to follow: "They set the blueprint and you just got to follow. You have to be disciplined. You have to be dedicated to your craft. If you don't want to follow, then you go home."
Antetokounmpo leaves Milwaukee as the franchise's undisputed leader: 21,531 points (over 7,000 more than Kareem Abdul-Jabbar with the Bucks), all-time franchise leader in rebounds and assists, second in steals. In 2021, he led the Bucks to their first NBA title in 50 years, scoring 50 points in Game 6 of the Finals against Phoenix and earning Finals MVP honors.
Head coach Erik Spoelstra shared a telling anecdote: "A little while ago Pat called me into his office and asked, 'Do you want to coach Giannis?' My answer was an obvious yes." The Greek star returned the admiration: "I'd rather you tell me the ugly truth than a beautiful lie. I want to be coached hard."
Bobby Portis Jr., introduced the same day, confirmed his new teammate's winning mindset: "The conversations I have with Giannis have always been about winning. Where can we go to win? How can you get another championship?"
