Giannis Antetokounmpo was formally introduced as a new Miami Heat player on Thursday 16 July 2026, in a welcome ceremony held at the Florida franchise's arena. The two-time NBA MVP walked on his new home court for the first time, greeted by chants from a few fans, and explained the reasons behind his move.
"I need pressure at this time of my career," Antetokounmpo said. "I think in order for me to go to the next level, I've got to get out of my comfort zone — and I feel like Miami was the place for me to be."
The Greek star had been watching Lionel Messi in the World Cup semifinals this week and drew inspiration from him. Messi joined Inter Miami three years ago, adding to his resume with awards and another Major League Soccer championship. Antetokounmpo is aiming for a similar trajectory: "That's the blueprint," he said. "LeBron James, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, they set the blueprint and you just got to follow. It's hard. You have to be disciplined, you have to be dedicated to your craft, but it's there. If you want to follow, you follow."
The presentation came a couple of weeks after the trade that landed the two-time MVP in Miami along with veteran forward Bobby Portis, in exchange for Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel'el Ware, Kasparas Jakucionis, the draft rights to rookie Nate Ament and multiple draft picks. For the Heat it is another in a long line of superstar acquisitions since Pat Riley became team president in 1995.
"I think this is just part of who the Heat are in the pursuit of excellence," Riley said. "But you don't win championships unless you have greatness on the court and on the bench. I'm just so excited for this challenge."
Antetokounmpo, who entered the NBA in 2013, leaves Milwaukee as the franchise's all-time leading scorer. Waiting for him in Miami is coach Erik Spoelstra: "I just want to be coached hard," the Greek said. "I'd rather you tell me the ugly truth than a beautiful lie."
