Giannis Antetokounmpo's extraordinary 13-year tenure with the Milwaukee Bucks officially ended on Monday as the two-time NBA MVP was traded to the Miami Heat in a blockbuster deal that reshapes the Eastern Conference landscape.
The Bucks sent Antetokounmpo and forward Bobby Portis Jr. to Miami in exchange for guard Tyler Herro, forward Jaime Jaquez Jr., center Kel'el Ware, Lithuanian guard Kasparas Jakucionis and multiple draft picks. The NBA approved the trade on Monday, July 6.
"This is one of the great trades in Heat history," Miami President Pat Riley said. "In my opinion, Giannis is one of the top five players in the league."
Antetokounmpo, who turns 32 in December, posted a heartfelt farewell video on social media addressing Bucks fans directly.
"Milwaukee will always be in my heart. This is my home, and this is a place where I had my kids. It made me the man I am today," Antetokounmpo said. "No matter where I am, Milwaukee will always be my city, my team, my family."
In a separate 37-minute interview with former Bucks broadcaster Jim Paschke, he admitted the difficulty of leaving the only NBA franchise he had ever known. "I'm scared that the grass is not always greener," he said. "People love me here. People respect me here. I'm scared that I might never find that ever again."
Yet the same relentless drive that delivered Milwaukee its first championship in 50 years pushed him toward the exit. The Bucks have not advanced beyond the second round since winning the 2021 title — their last postseason series victory came in 2022.
"I'm scared that maybe if I don't take that decision, when I'm going to be 37, 38 years old and I'm retiring, I'm going to say: 'Why? Why didn't you take that risk?'" Antetokounmpo reflected.
Antetokounmpo leaves Milwaukee as the franchise's all-time leader in points (21,531), rebounds, assists, blocks, games played and minutes. His 21,531 points are more than 7,000 ahead of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's total during his Bucks tenure. The highlight remains the 2021 NBA Finals, where he scored 50 points in Game 6 against the Phoenix Suns, earning Finals MVP honors.
Bucks general manager Jon Horst praised Antetokounmpo's legacy: "Since we drafted him in 2013, Giannis has transformed the Milwaukee Bucks in every way — on the court, in our locker room and throughout the community. The standard he set will continue here."
Antetokounmpo now joins a Miami franchise hungry to return to title contention, pairing with Bam Adebayo in what promises to be a formidable partnership in the Eastern Conference.
