Robin Gosens fulfils a childhood dream by wearing the royal blue of Schalke 04. The 32-year-old left-sided defender, back in the Bundesliga with the Gelsenkirchen promoted side, moves from Fiorentina on a one-year loan: should they retain their top-flight status, a purchase obligation worth around €1.5 million kicks in. The deal was confirmed on Friday, 17 July 2026.
"Everyone knows I have a special relationship with Schalke. I'm really looking forward to this task," Gosens said, adding: "I want to lead the way with my performances and take on responsibility." The Germany international, with 24 caps and a standout showing at Euro 2021, will occupy the left-back role and is expected to be a charismatic leader in a dressing room seeking experience and mentality.
Gosens arrived in Gelsenkirchen on Thursday morning to complete his medical and is set to join the training camp in Austria at the weekend. The wing-back, who since 2017 has worn the shirts of Atalanta, Inter, Fiorentina and, on a 2023-24 stint, Union Berlin, accepts a financial cut yet still becomes one of the squad's top earners.
