Francesca Jones claimed the WTA 125 Roma title on Sunday, defeating Italian home favourite Lucia Bronzetti 6-3, 6-1 in a one-sided final at the Antico Tiro a Volo club.
The British qualifier was clinical throughout, converting her only break point opportunity in the first set to seize control. From that moment, Jones played with freedom and composure, restricting Bronzetti to just four games across the entire match.
Bronzetti, who had fought her way through the draw on home soil, struggled to find her rhythm against Jones's aggressive baseline game. The Italian earned three break point chances in the second set but failed to convert any, watching helplessly as Jones closed out the title with ruthless efficiency.
The emotional aftermath of the match became a talking point. Bronzetti broke down in tears at the net, overwhelmed by the disappointment of losing a final in front of her home crowd. Jones, displaying the sportsmanship that has endeared her to fans, walked over to console her opponent, offering words of comfort before the trophy presentation.
"Lucia and her team did a fantastic job this week," Jones said during the ceremony. "We both played great tennis throughout the tournament, regardless of our current rankings. This win is important because it brings me closer to the Top 100."
The victory marks a significant milestone in Jones's comeback from a right-leg injury earlier in the season, which had halted her momentum after she reached a career-high ranking close to the Top 70. The Rome title boosts her towards her goal of returning to the Top 100 by year's end.
