Juventus completed a dramatic deadline day overhaul on Monday, sealing loan deals for Newcastle United striker Nick Woltemade and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pape Matar Sarr to give Luciano Spalletti a revamped squad for the Serie A campaign.
The two signings, finalised in the final hours of the Italian transfer window, address longstanding weaknesses in both the attacking and midfield departments. Woltemade, the 23-year-old Germany international, joins on a season-long loan from Newcastle, while Sarr, a 22-year-old Senegal international, arrives from Spurs on a similar arrangement with an option to buy.
Woltemade: a towering presence up front
Woltemade's arrival at the Allianz Stadium provides Spalletti with a physical focal point that Juventus have lacked since Dusan Vlahovic's departure to Besiktas earlier in the window. Standing at 1.98 metres, the centre-forward impressed during his time at Newcastle, though limited opportunities behind Alexander Isak pushed him toward a temporary move.
The loan deal is understood to be a straight seasonal arrangement without an obligation to purchase, giving Juventus flexibility to evaluate the German's suitability for Italian football before committing to a permanent transfer. Woltemade is expected to compete with Kenan Yildiz and Jonathan David — who moved to Atletico Madrid earlier this summer — for a starting berth in Spalletti's front line.
Sarr: midfield reinforcement with long-term upside
Sarr's move carries greater financial implications. Juventus will pay Tottenham an initial loan fee of €2.5 million, with ancillary costs bringing the total to approximately €2.8 million. More significantly, the deal includes a purchase option set at €27.5 million, payable over three financial years, potentially taking the total outlay to around €30 million.
The Senegalese midfielder, who signed for Spurs from Metz in 2021, has struggled for consistent game time in North London. His combination of energy, ball-carrying ability and defensive work rate makes him an attractive fit for Spalletti's pressing system. Sarr will join a midfield group that already includes Manuel Locatelli, Teun Koopmeiners and Douglas Luiz, though the new arrival is expected to challenge for a regular starting role.
A statement of intent
The double swoop underscores Juventus's determination to remain competitive at the top of Serie A despite financial constraints that have limited their spending power compared to rivals. By opting for loan deals with embedded options, the club has managed to strengthen significantly without breaching spending limits, while retaining the option — but not the obligation — to make the moves permanent.
For Spalletti, the new arrivals offer tactical flexibility. Woltemade's aerial presence and link-up play give Juventus a Plan B when the more technical forwards struggle to break down deep defences, while Sarr's dynamic running from midfield can inject pace and penetration into transitions.
Both players are expected to be available for selection immediately, with Juventus travelling to face Cagliari in their next Serie A fixture. The window may be closed, but for the Bianconeri, the real work is only just beginning.
