Lando Norris claimed his first Grand Prix victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season and McLaren's maiden win of the year with a commanding performance at the Hungarian Grand Prix, crossing the line 15 seconds clear of Max Verstappen at the Hungaroring.
The reigning world champion started from pole position but was immediately put on the back foot as team-mate Oscar Piastri executed a brilliant cut-back at Turn 2 on the opening lap to seize the lead. What followed was a tense intra-team battle that defined the first half of the 70-lap race.
Norris, visibly faster in clean air, grew increasingly frustrated on team radio as McLaren declined to swap positions. "I'm miles faster," he argued, but the team kept the order intact through the first pit-stop cycle.
The race turned decisively on Lap 33. McLaren called Piastri in for his second stop first, leaving Norris on older tyres in clear air. The Briton responded with blistering pace, opening a net pit-stop advantage. Piastri's afternoon unravelled further when he made contact with Carlos Sainz's Williams while lapping — a collision that drew a five-second penalty for the Spaniard and tilted track position decisively towards Norris.
Norris pitted on Lap 40 and emerged ahead of his Australian team-mate. "My pace today was probably some of the best pace I've ever had. The car was beautiful to drive," Norris said post-race.
Piastri's misery was compounded with 14 laps remaining when a gearbox failure forced him to retire, triggering a Virtual Safety Car. Norris, Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc all pitted under the VSC — but crucially Kimi Antonelli and Verstappen stayed out, gaining track position.
Hamilton's hopes of a podium evaporated when Ferrari called him in for an extra stop. The seven-time champion was penalised five seconds for speeding in the pit lane, dropping him from fourth to fifth behind team-mate Leclerc at the flag. Verstappen held on for a gritty second place, while Antonelli's third place extended his championship lead to 50 points over Hamilton.
George Russell recovered superbly from an anti-stall issue at the start that dropped him to 21st, fighting back to seventh. Racing Bulls scored a double points finish through Liam Lawson (P8) and Arvid Lindblad (P10), split by Audi's Nico Hulkenberg in ninth. Isack Hadjar took sixth in the second Red Bull.
The only other retirements were Cadillac's Valtteri Bottas (overheating brakes) and Sergio Perez (front-left issue).
Formula 1 now enters its summer break before returning at the Dutch Grand Prix on August 21-23.
