Lando Norris secured his first victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season with a masterful drive at the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday, holding off Max Verstappen at the Hungaroring to reignite his championship campaign.
The McLaren driver started from pole position but was overtaken by teammate Oscar Piastri at the first corner. Piastri led the opening phase of the race and looked on course for a strong result before his race unravelled. A gearbox failure forced the Australian's retirement with just 13 laps remaining, handing the net lead to Norris.
Norris crossed the line 15.080 seconds ahead of Verstappen's Red Bull, while Mercedes' Andrea Kimi Antonelli completed the podium in third place. The result marks a significant turnaround for the defending world champion, who had struggled for consistency through the opening rounds of the season and had not stood on the top step since late 2025.
Charles Leclerc finished fourth for Ferrari, driving a measured race from the midfield. Lewis Hamilton endured a more frustrating afternoon. The seven-time world champion was running strongly in podium contention until a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane with just a few laps remaining dropped him to fifth. The penalty proved costly, as Hamilton had been one of the fastest drivers on track in the closing stages.
George Russell's difficult run continued. The Mercedes driver could manage only seventh after his car's anti-stall technology was triggered at the start, causing him to lose multiple positions from sixth on the grid. He recovered some ground with the fastest lap but could not climb further up the order.
Isack Hadjar delivered an impressive sixth-place finish for Red Bull, continuing his strong debut season. The Racing Bulls duo of Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad secured eighth and tenth respectively, with Nico Hulkenberg scoring his first points of the 2026 campaign for Audi in ninth.
Oscar Piastri's retirement was particularly costly for his title aspirations. The McLaren driver entered the weekend 112 points behind championship leader Antonelli, and the zero-point haul leaves him with a mountain to climb in the second half of the season.
The championship now takes its summer break before resuming at the Dutch Grand Prix on August 23. Antonelli leads the standings on 219 points, 50 clear of Hamilton in second. Russell sits third on 160, nine points behind his former teammate. Norris's victory lifts him to 128 points in fifth place, keeping his title hopes very much alive with 13 rounds still to run.
