Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez struck in extra time as Argentina outlasted 10-man Switzerland 3-1 in the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup at Kansas City Stadium.
Alexis Mac Allister gave Argentina an early lead with a firm header from a Lionel Messi corner, but Dan Ndoye levelled for Switzerland midway through the second half. The contest swung back in Argentina's favour in the 72nd minute when Breel Embolo was shown a second yellow card for simulation and sent off. Messi then curled narrowly wide in search of a late winner before Thiago Almada clipped the post at the start of extra time.
Alvarez settled it with a breathtaking curler and Lautaro Martinez sealed the result in the 120th+1 minute. It was Argentina's 15th successive World Cup game with a goal, and Lionel Scaloni's side will now face England in the second semi-final at Atlanta Stadium on Wednesday. Alvarez was named Player of the Match.
