LeBron James has ended months of speculation by announcing he will join the Philadelphia 76ers on a two-year veterans' minimum deal worth approximately $3.9 million per season, calling the move his "last decision" and instantly reshaping the balance of power in the Eastern Conference.
The 41-year-old, who turns 42 in December, revealed his decision on Friday, choosing Philadelphia over reported interest from Cleveland, Miami and Golden State. James will now team up with reigning league MVP Joel Embiid, All-Stars Tyrese Maxey and newly acquired Jaylen Brown, and promising second-year guard VJ Edgecombe.
"This is my last decision," James wrote in his announcement. "I'm not going for money. I'm not going for family. What am I really playing for at this point?"
The answer, it appears, is history. James has the opportunity to become the first player in NBA history to win championships with four different franchises, having previously lifted the Larry O'Brien Trophy with Cleveland, Miami and the Los Angeles Lakers.
The move represents a stunning coup for Philadelphia, a franchise that has not won a title since Julius Erving led the team in 1983 — a year before James was born. Newly appointed team president Mike Gansey, who replaced Daryl Morey, has orchestrated a remarkable off-season. He acquired Brown — the 2024 NBA Finals MVP and a five-time All-Star — from the Boston Celtics in a blockbuster trade, and now lands the league's all-time leading scorer on perhaps the biggest bargain in sports history.
James will cost the 76ers roughly the same as rookie Labaron Philon this season, yet his presence immediately elevates Philadelphia into championship contention. The 76ers join a loaded Eastern Conference that includes the reigning champion New York Knicks, a Miami Heat team that added Giannis Antetokounmpo, and a Detroit Pistons squad that won 60 games last season.
There are questions, of course. James played only 60 games last season due to injuries. Embiid has played just 57 combined games over the last two seasons. Chemistry between four stars who all demand the ball will take time to develop, as James himself acknowledged when he wrote that he still wants "to sacrifice" and "to work."
But if everything clicks, Philadelphia — a franchise that hasn't advanced past the second round since 2001 — could finally deliver the parade down Broad Street that its long-suffering fans have waited four decades to witness.
