Leigh Hoffman capped a remarkable Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games with victory in the men's 1,000m time trial, smashing the Games record with a ride of 58.530 seconds at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome on Sunday.
The Australian sprinter, starting second-last, produced the best splits throughout and became the first Australian cyclist to win four medals at a single Commonwealth Games, adding the kilo to golds in the team sprint and the individual sprint, plus silver in the keirin. “It sucks I didn’t win gold in the keirin, but that’s keirin racing,” Hoffman said. “To pick up another three gold, I cannot complain.”
England's Joseph Truman, the final rider to start, never looked like threatening the Australian and posted 59.525 seconds to take silver. Tayte Ryan, the fourth-last starter, was the first man under the minute and secured bronze in 59.684, pushing England's Harry Ledingham-Horn off the podium: the rider who had topped the standings after 11 competitors with 1:00.039 slipped to fourth. Hamish Turnbull, also of England, opened with the third-quickest first 250m of the day (18.637) but faded to eighth.
